Introducing Derek Chenet, DDS
Dr. Derek Chenet was exposed to dentistry from a very young age. His father is also a dentist and has cultivated a similar passion in his son. Today, Derek is excited to work alongside his wife, but more than anything else, he looks forward to forming lasting patient relationships that lead to healthy smiles for a lifetime. You can learn more about Dr. Chenet by reading the information below.
Why Did You Become a Dentist?
With dentistry in his family, Derek had many opportunities to learn about this field growing up. However, his interests weren’t exactly focused on the healthcare until later. During his undergraduate education, he majored in chemistry. Once he realized that the available job positions would trap him in a lab, he realized he wanted to have more freedom in his career. In addition, he wanted to work in a more social environment where he could make a positive difference in the community.
When he spoke to his father on the subject, he quickly learned that dentistry included chemistry as well as engineering. He would get to exercise the scientist side of his mind, and he would have a chance to communicate and help the community directly with their dental health.
What Is Your Educational Background?
After completing his undergraduate education at Duke University, Derek attended Columbia University to pursue his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. During his time there, he was given a whole new perspective by one of his professors, Dr. Cloidt, who taught Derek the importance of the patient experience and making sure all of his patients were properly informed about their oral health.
Soon after graduation, he completed post-graduate training at the James J. Peters Veterans Affairs Medical Center in the Bronx, where he was fully trained in the planning, placement, and restoration of dental implants, fixed and removable prosthetics, and other restorative procedures.
What Do You Do Outside the Dental Office?
After 10 years away from his hometown, Dr. Chenet has easily re-acclimated to Florida’s weather and is excited to offer the community top-tier dental care that families in the area have come to expect.
While at Duke, Dr. Chenet was a film projectionist for the school’s in-house theater, where he learned how to project 35 mm films. To this day, he still is an avid movie-goer. His favorite films include Disney’s Pixar’sToy Story and Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, and he is always ready to watch one of the Mission Impossible movies.
In his spare time, Dr. Chenet also enjoys playing basketball and tennis with his wife, reading and collecting comic books like Spider-man and Archie, playing with his Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Char, spending time with his younger siblings.
